While we usually avoid heavy equipment, this was just too much soil to move by hand. Sunbelt Rentals in Guelph was nice enough to donate a mini-excavator for the day (and the boys at Sean James Consulting & Design worked their butts off!
Breaking ground at the new rain garden at the University of Guelph Arboretum. Exciting to be creating a garden here!
It’s been years since Sean was in one of these machines, but he still had the knack, creating this rain garden for the three workshops for the upcoming Master Gardeners Conference.
We moved about 20 yards of excavate, preparing the garden (roughly, since the workshop participants need to learn the whole process, including fine sculpting/grading.
Sean James, fine grading some of the rain garden, so participants in the rain garden workshop can see how it should be done.
Coming together nicely. The American Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) will be happy to have more water around their roots! It’ll look great when it’s all planted up after the conference!
The team at Sean James Consulting & Design, and the folks at the University of Guelph Arboretum DID play by the rules. They called before they dug! Utility locates showed there was a water line running under the garden, and even though it would have been 4 – 6 feet deep, as per the rules, everything was hand dug, 3 feet on either side of the utility markings. (Lots of sweat, but job well done!)
